Parties | Murder Mystery

I was invited to a murder mystery party for a friend's birthday last night, and while I can't take credit for planning anything, it was so fun that I had to write about it!

Here's the description of the party:

A night of mystery and intrigue in the wild and romantic era of the roaring 20's!

With the passing of prohibition and organized crime on the rise, The Juice Joint,
a swanky speakeasy run by Rosie Marie, has been nothing but jumping. To celebrate its success,
Rosie is planning a party to remember at the exclusive nightspot… and you are invited!

All of the invitees got information about their characters ahead of time as well as the run down of everyone else involved. I was Kitty Cocktail, the cocktail waitress, and Jon was Cy Ramsey, the Juice Joint bouncer and my main squeeze. Once all the guests arrived, (there were about 15 of us), we were given objectives to accomplish to get the party started. After the initial mingling, there was a murder (gasp!), and we then received new objectives to accomplish in order to solve the crime.

The hostess decorated her apartment with fun posters, and there were themed drinks. People got into character, making for a really fun evening. There were awards for best dressed and best actor. We all got fake money at the outset to use however we wanted, (bribes, paying for snacks/drinks, etc), and there was also an award for whoever collected the most money.

The party was such a fun idea, and the site where you can purchase the game has a ton of other fun themes, (link earlier in the post). I highly recommend this for a party!

For the second part of the post, here's a DIY Flapper Costume!

The Outfit
You don't have to have a fancy flapper dress, you just need to wear black because the accessories are more important. I wore a flirty skirt and a black sleeveless top. I also picked up cheap fishnet tights and wore black shoes. Fringe is great if you have it! Here are a few pictures for ideas:

The Accessories
  • Long pearls--this is a must!
  • Black gloves optional
  • Beaded or sparkly headband with a feather
  • Feather boas
  • Fake cigar/cigarette.
The Makeup
Caroline looked up 1920s make up and discovered that the round eye look was in back then, (compared to the cat-eye nowadays). Chunky eyelashes, (think Twiggy). Red lipstick! Thanks, Caroline, for doing my make up!

The Hair
I curled my hair so that it would keep an updo better. I put the headband across my forehead and over my hair at the nape of my neck. I took small sections and rolled them into the headband.Hopefully the pictures help.

For Men
Dress pants, simple dress shirt, fake cigarette behind the ear, suspenders, fake toy gun
To go all out--fedora and a trench coat!
